The earliest book in the Town Library dates from c1350, and the Collection includes books from all centuries since that date.

All the books in the Library purchased since 1967 are listed in the Essex Libraries online catalogue: ELAN

A project funded by the Heritage Lottery Commission and The Pilgrim Trust has enabled the employment of a cataloguer, who is currently adding the pre-1967 books to the ELAN catalogue. This project should be completed by November 2004.

The original printed Dictionary Catalogue (3 volumes), and the 8 volume Author Catalogue compiled in the 1980s are available for consultation in the Town Library.
