Town Library Society

President: Bruce Munro.
Chairman: Martyn Everett.

Among the features of which Saffron Walden has reason to be proud, a high place should be allotted to the Town Library; it offers the residents and visitors opportunities which are rarely found even in much larger towns.

The Library was administered by the Trustees of the Saffron Walden Literary & Scientific Institution for 134 years, until in 1968 it passed into the Trusteeship of the Essex County Council, and is still housed in the same premises.

It contains many rare and valuable books of the greatest interest both to researchers and to the ordinary reader, covering most periods and disciplines. There is a wealth of material particularly attractive to those undertaking Victorian Studies, which is being added regularly.

The Town Library Society was founded in 1982 to encourage interest in, and support for, the Library, by arranging activities such as talks designed to widen knowledge of the Library and its contents. It also affords opportunities for members to meet others of similar interests, and particularly opportunities to give practical help in caring for this remarkable collection. The Library is affiliated to the Association of Independent Libraries.

The annual membership subscription is currently a minimum of £7. Further particulars of the Society's activities and meetings can be obtained from, and applications for membership should be made, using this form, which should be posted to:
